After a one year stint living under SGR, in 2003 Congress decided to estimate, a permanent doc fix (i.e., repeal of SGR) would "cost" $131 billion over the next ten years. Been a magnet for other healthcare spending, known as healthcare "extenders. Every time they do so, it's a Chinese firedrill of the highest order. MACRA stabilizes the Medicare payment system permanently repealing the SGR and scheduling payments into the future: through June 2015: Stable payments with no cuts. July 2015 2019: 0.5% annual payment increases to all Medicare physicians. Yesterday, the Senate passed the long-awaited permanent doc fix, previously passed the House of Representatives, to repeal the sustainable growth rate formula (SGR) and avert a 21 percent across-the-board cut in Medicare's physician fees that was originally scheduled to take effect on April 1. With SGR Repealed, Replacement Policy Creates New Priorities voted in favor of permanently replacing the Sustainable SGR formula in favor of a new system touted as promoting quality We will address these provisions in subsequent blog posts.
